Exposed pipes -- both in the attic and outside the home -- are vulnerable to freezing when it gets very cold outside, says home expert Tom Tynan, host of Home Show Radio. These pipes are susceptible to freezing because they are stagnant, he says. "The water in them is sitting still, and unless you are using the water, it can freeze."

Pipe insulation should fit the pipe tightly. Determine how many feet of pipe you have, what size and type, Tynan says.

If the insulation is too large,  it creates a large air space where sweating can occur and ice forms. If this occurs, the insulation gets wet and is destroyed.

Check around your home for areas where water supply lines are located -- inlucing the garage, and under kitchen sink and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
